Donkey Beach

The name alone earns a second look. Officially called Paliku, Donkey Beach got its nickname from the mules and donkeys kept nearby by the Lihue Plantation Company, used to haul bundles of seed cane across the fields. The plantation is long gone, but the name stuck — and so did the beach’s reputation as one of the east shore’s most character-filled stretches of sand.

The half-mile path from the parking lot descends through a beautiful tree canopy and deposits you onto a wide, ironwood-shaded beach with turquoise water and a quiet, natural feel.
