Location & Setting
Makanui is centrally located within the lush, 70-acre Poipu Kai Resort, perfectly situated between Poipu Beach Park to the west and Shipwreck Beach to the east. This small, quiet complex sits in the south-central portion of the resort near the Grand Hyatt Kauai and its restaurants, spa, and beach trails. Makanui includes just seven buildings and 22 vacation condos, giving it a more intimate feel than many other resort communities. One of the buildings is a detached single-level home — a rare offering for those seeking extra space and privacy.
Atmosphere & Style
Spacious and peaceful, Makanui appeals to guests looking for room to spread out and a more residential experience. Surrounded by wide open lawns and tropical plantings, the setting feels relaxed and neighborly. Condos are generously sized and often feature open floor plans, vaulted ceilings, and private lanais, making it ideal for extended stays or family vacations.
Accommodations
Makanui offers some of the largest condos within Poipu Kai, including one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and even three-bedroom homes. Sizes range from approximately 913 to 1800 square feet.
Views vary and may include garden, mountain, or distant ocean glimpses, depending on the specific property and floor level. As with many older Poipu Kai communities, central or split A/C is not allowed at Makanui. Some homes feature portable air conditioners in the bedrooms only, while others rely on ceiling fans and island breezes. Guests should check the cooling setup when selecting a condo.
Amenities
Guests at Makanui enjoy access to a community swimming pool, located within the complex, as well as access to Poipu Kai’s larger resort pool, hot tub, and tennis courts. BBQ grills are available on site.
Some Makanui properties also include membership to the Poipu Beach Athletic Club (PBAC), which offers a full fitness center, resort-style pool with a slide, tennis and pickleball courts, and a casual restaurant. PBAC access varies by property and should be confirmed at the time of booking.
